John Cena Wasn't Actually Naked at the 2024 Oscars

The wrestler and actor stripped down to nothing but Birkenstocks on stage Sunday night in honor of the film industry's costume departments

John Cena took precautions to ensure he didn't reveal too much while on stage at the 2024 Oscars. Despite appearing almost completely nude while presenting the award for best costume design, the 46-year-old actor had measures in place to prevent any wardrobe mishaps.

Photographs from behind the scenes depict Cena standing in an Oscars corridor with only a modesty pouch shielding his intimate areas. This pouch essentially functioned as underwear, providing coverage both in the front and back. Although it seemed as though Cena could potentially expose himself to the audience at any moment, the Oscars wardrobe team ensured that such an incident would be avoided.

Cena took to the stage sporting nothing but an oversized winner's envelope strategically placed to cover his groin area, along with a pair of Birkenstocks. This attire was a deliberate nod to a memorable Oscars moment from the past. Host Jimmy Kimmel referenced the 46th Academy Awards in 1974 when David Niven was interrupted by a streaker while introducing Elizabeth Taylor.

Kimmel, introducing Cena, humorously pondered the possibility of a similar incident occurring today. Cena's appearance seemed to fit the description, although he wasn't aiming to be Hollywood's next streaker. The duo bantered about Cena's supposed intention to streak in response to Kimmel's hypothetical scenario, but Cena backed out at the last minute.

In response, Cena jokingly chided Kimmel for suggesting such a tasteless idea and emphasized that the male body shouldn't be treated as a joke.

Cena proceeded to the center stage holding the oversized presenter's envelope to announce the award, which ultimately went to Poor Things. However, Cena humorously struggled to lift the envelope to reveal the nominees, highlighting the importance of costumes by referring to his own nudity. "Costumes... they are so important. Maybe the most important thing there is," Cena quipped, acknowledging his inability to open the envelope while maintaining his modesty.

Kimmel stepped in to assist, announcing the nominations himself so Cena could remain fully covered, ensuring a seamless presentation despite the comedic hurdle.

By the time the nominee montage ended, Cena was clothed in a makeshift toga, which looked like it was fashioned out of an Oscars stage curtain and tassel.
